CEOSS Organizes a Workshop on Agroecology to Enhance Cooperation and Build Shared Visions in Egypt
The Local Development Unit at the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services (CEOSS) is organizing a specialized workshop on agroecology under the title:
“Field Insights, Shared Principles, and Future Cooperation among Civil Society Organizations in Egypt”,
in cooperation with Brot für die Welt, during the month of December, with the participation of partners from various Egyptian governorates (Cairo – Minya – Assyut – New Valley).
This workshop comes at a critical moment for Egypt’s agricultural sector, which is facing escalating challenges related to water scarcity, soil degradation, rising input costs, climate change impacts, and increasing pressure on smallholder farmers. The workshop stems from a renewed understanding that agroecology represents a more holistic and sustainable pathway, relying on farmers’ local knowledge and ecological principles that enhance soil regeneration, improve water use, diversify production systems, and strengthen resilience—while also opening new opportunities for rural entrepreneurship and improving food quality and nutritional value.
The workshop focuses on exchanging field-based experiences among civil society organizations and “Bread for the World” partners, covering topics such as soil, seeds, water management, local value chains, women’s leadership, and community organizing. It also supports farmer-led solutions and expands the national dialogue on sustainable agriculture.
In addition, the workshop aims to identify practical steps to scale up agroecology across different agricultural landscapes, present the emerging Egyptian agroecology network and explore ways to connect it with regional initiatives, as well as discuss strategic questions related to long-term food security, water conservation, soil restoration, and the role of farmers, women, youth, and cooperatives in shaping agricultural policies. The workshop also examines mechanisms for strengthening cooperation between Egypt and other regions, such as East Africa.
